There is truth to information overload. For the past month, I've been reading a lot of ebooks, watching tutorial videos, and interacting in forums that my mind is now loaded with tons of ideas and information about Internet marketing.

This is not good because I'm starting to get derailed to my initial plan on how to get my foot into IM. By this I mean by earning a steady income from it.

I've come across dozens of ideas and strategies that I admit I am tempted to try some of them, but in return I lose track of my first project.

Now I'm going to fix this. By focusing on just one project until its completion then do another one, a different one and see which one I would succeed in. :)

The Importance of the Tire Wrench

I was driving my aunt's car this morning to do some errands. I stopped at a gasoline station, filled the car's tank and then the gasoline attendant brought my attention to one of my tires.

It was flat. No wonder the steering wheel was veering to the right while I was driving.

There was a nice shaded spot within the gasoline station's premises where I decided to park while I change the tire. But lo and behold! When I opened the compartment and brought out the tool box, there was no tire wrench.

Now how can anybody change a tire without a wrench? I asked around the station if they have one I could borrow, but there wasn't. Instead they pointed me to a vulcanizing shop that was just a short drive from there. So with a flat tire I drove away.

Good thing there was a vulcanizing shop nearby or else I would try to ask a fellow driver if I could borrow his wrench.

Lesson learned. Always check if you have the necessary equipment for your car whenever you go out for a drive.

Nostalgia: The Sega Mega Drive

Back in the '80s up to the early '90s, my favorite video game console was the Sega Mega Drive or what we call here on this side of the globe as the Sega Genesis. I remember the debate that was going on at that time that the Mega Drive was superior, in terms of computing power, compared to the Nintendo SNES. I used to believe that until Donkey Kong Country came out. The graphics on that game was superb and Sega had nothing on its shelf to match it.

Anyway, I preferred the Mega Drive and I'm not really sure why. Perhaps because it was cheaper than the SNES.

Missing the First Diner Dash

I'm considering getting Diner Dash again, either here on my laptop or on my PlayStation Portable. I first played it about 3 years ago and I really had so much fun with it. I was playing it at the office during break time, together with another addicting game: Worms Armageddon.

Those were really fun days! I remember we used to hold competitions as to who can advance Flo the farthest and the quickest, considering that we only had an hour's lunch break. I never won at Diner Dash (although I was a pretty good player with Worms) maybe because I had no strategy. I mean, I didn't even bother to match the color of my diners to the color of the seats to get extra points.

Anyway, I miss the point and click action that this game brings so maybe I'll go ahead and get it.

Dofus

I play only one online game and it's Dofus. Before I was skeptical about these games thinking that they are just a major waste of time. But a friend who has been playing Dofus for quite some time asked me to try it. So I thought there's no harm to it, it's just one try. But what did you know? That one try got me hooked!

Now I'm a paid subscriber and I get to visit all the places in Dofus although my character's still very weak at just 43 level. It's an Osamodas by the way. I can't wait till I get the Punch of the Crackler then I can defeat more enemies and can easily level up.

PinoyCopywriter Has a New Home

My other blog, PinoyCopywriter.com, now has a new home. By home I meant a new hosting company. The previous one I have been with for almost a year already but their service was turning into worse the past couple of months.

I kept on sending a support ticket to them usually about my blog being down or that instead of the new template showing up, it was still the old template with my still then un-updated posts.

It was really a pain in the neck dealing with them so when I got tired of submitting support tickets, that's when I started looking for another hosting.

Oh, and one of the things that my blog suffered from was the lost of readers. A couple of blogging friends emailed me that whenever they tried to visit my blog, it was always down. Tsk. That was it for me. It was time to move.

And so I did and so far everything's a charm.

My Other Blog's Not Working Right

My other blog, a self-hosted blog, has been down for the past days. I have already submitted a support ticket to my hosting company but they still have yet to reply to it. Needless to say, I am very much disappointed.

Then early today I received an email from them. It's an automatically generated email informing me that my domain registration for that blog will expire 2 months from now.

Did you get that? Two months from now. I still have two months to register and they have the 'kindness' to tell me this early. But my blog is still down and they haven't fixed it yet (or even replied to my support ticket).

I am still very much disappointed.

Google Owns Me!

Well, not completely but it's getting there.

I just realized that almost every day that I go online, I use one or two of Google's services. Like when I make a search, of course, I go to Google...

...when I write a document and I'm in an internet cafe, I use Google Docs
...my email is Gmail
...I talk to some of my friends through GTalk
...heck, I blog on Blogger

I think there are a lot more things that I do online that uses something that Google owns. Even my favorite pastime which is watching videos on YouTube, now that's Google's too.

Should I cut back on using Google's services? But how can I when usually these services are the best and the easiest to use.

I'm Not a Fan of Yahoo!'s New Look

Call me nostalgic, old fashioned and every synonym you can think of, but I'm really not a fan of this new Yahoo! look that is being forced unto me.

Now every time I launch Yahoo! on my browser I get this purple thing for an interface. I don't like it.

Facebook Has Millions of New Users: But Is It a Good Thing?

I'm starting to enjoy Facebook more than Friendster. Don't get me wrong. I still like Friendster, it's just that Facebook's layout is more intuitive, I get things done faster and, at least in my opinion, Facebook has more interesting apps and features.

Last night, while casually browsing, I stumbled upon an online column (I'll try to find it and post the link here) wherein the writer mentioned that although Facebook is growing exponentially, they are growing in the wrong market.

The writer argued that most of the new Facebook users are people outside the United States who generate very small advertising revenue for the social site. What this means is that few advertisers are interested in having their ads shown to these demographics.

Being here in the Philippines, I am pretty sure that we belong to that demographic.

Facebook needs servers to provide the service to all these new users. And servers cost a lot of money. If these new users are not generating enough income to contribute to Facebook's finances, should the company just close their doors to these people and instead focus on U.S. members instead?

That would be a sad day indeed should that thing happen.

Is Twitter Killing Blogs?

A friend of mine, who is so much into Twitter, argued that Twitter is starting to kill blogs. He gave me these points:

It is very popular today. There are already millions of users worldwide.
The 140-character limit forces you to be creative and to make you write down your thoughts more effectively.
You get faster comments / responses to your Tweets than when you make a blog post.
Your Tweets instantly reaches as many people as you have followers.

I can understand my friend's points there but I completely disagree that Twitter is killing blogs. With blogs, you can expound on your thoughts and even write about it in as many words that you want or need.

You may get faster replies on Twitter, but the comments made on your blog is more properly documented. You can always go back to your comments section and ponder upon the interaction that happened there.

A lot of people use Twitter as just a tool to support their blogging. They would usually announce a new post on their blog or engage in communication with other people, trying to get them interested enough to go visit their blogs. If just for that, I believe Twitter is indeed a great tool.

But Twitter is not a replacement for blogs. In its current state, Twitter cannot kill blogs.

People who are into marketing, who are trying to attract people to try out their own services or products should not rely too much on Twitter for those purposes. My point is this: why invest the majority of your marketing efforts on a platform that you have no control?

With a blog, at least a self-hosted blog, the platform is yours for as long as you want it. You own the domain. You own the hosting space. It is all yours from whatever angle you look at it.

I'll repeat what I've said earlier. Twitter is a great tool, but as of today it is not a blog killer. Perhaps more than anything else, Twitter is a blogging tool.

First Time Twitter

I have survived the rest of 2008 without taking part in the phenomenon we call, Twitter. Why you might ask? I'm not really sure. All I know is that nobody I know have invited me until this time.

And I had to be invited before I even took time to give Twitter a try. I'm weird.

Anyway, so my friend told me how wonderful Twitter is and how well you can make connections with other people, especially with people you haven't even met (in person or online). I followed her advice on trying Twitter so I created my account and started sending out Tweets (did I spell it right?).

I found out it was really very fun to use Twitter. In just 4 hours, I already 5 followers including my friend. I have also downloaded and installed Twhirl, a Twitter client, as I've read quite a number of great reviews about it.

So here I am, a Twitter newbie still learning all about it while the rest of the world have made Tweets like a thousand times.

New Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz will be getting a $1 million annual basic pay.

Your first impression might be, "Not much!"

I also thought the same but perhaps it is a sign that she is confident that she can overhaul Yahoo! and bring it back to the top, more particularly its stock price. Otherwise, why would a veteran technology CEO accept such a meager pay?

It is indeed small compared to other CEOs.

I love Yahoo! and I practically grew up with it (in internet years). When I first started learning about the World Wide Web and the internet, I thought WWW and the internet ARE Yahoo!

Being a Yahoo! fan and user of its great services, I truly and deeply wish Ms. Bartz the best of luck.

Where Do You Spend the Money You Earn From Blogging?

This question is for people who monetize their blog. By monetization it can be from any means such as paid posts, link ads, etc.

My girlfriend and I have a number of blogs, some of these blogs we have monetized and have been earning a decent amount. We put all of our blog earnings into our budget for the house we are currently paying.

Actually we are still paying for the equity of the house and we are very grateful that our blog earnings have so far covered our monthly equity.

So blogging for us has been a very great help in fulfilling our dream of having our own home. What I love most about this hobby is that I get to do what I love (which is writing or blogging) and earn from it.

What more can a blogger ask for?

Digg is Losing Money

Do you use Digg? I seldom participate and I only Digg an article when I find it really amazing, when it makes me sit on the edge of my seat.

Digg is currently having grave financial difficulties. This is because up until now, they still can't generate enough revenues from their advertising system. They are still spending more on operation expenses. With little money coming in, it definitely spell disaster for this company.

There are rumors that Digg will probably be bought by either Google or Yahoo!. But will they? Yahoo! is having some problems itself and as far as I know, is still looking for a CEO to replace Chief Yahoo! Jerry Yang.

Digg actually has a nice service and I would hate it if they fold up. Perhaps they just need an innovative marketing strategy to help monetize their site. It is after all a problem shared with the likes of YouTube and other popular sites.

How Much Do You Trust a Blogger?

I just remember that I've read a news article about two weeks ago that more and more people are relying on the accounts or statements that bloggers write regarding products and services.

Let me clear that up a little bit. That news article said that when people wants to buy something, let's say a new laptop, they would go Google it and then would choose to read the reviews made by bloggers regarding that new laptop model that they want.

It means that more people are starting to value the opinions of bloggers and highly gives importance to these bloggers whenever they make their purchase decisions.

What could be behind it? I can only think of one thing. Perhaps it's because bloggers are just like you and me. They are common, normal people who have tried a certain product, got pleased or pissed with it, and just stating their opinions of it. It makes the product review more human and more likely to be unbiased, assuming that the blogger was not paid to write that review.

I also have my faith on my fellow bloggers that whenever I want to find out about something, I try to find what others say about it before I dole out the cash. So far everything that I bought using this technique brought me much satisfaction. Whether it's my Asus Eee PC, my Genius headset or my Samsung LCD monitor. It goes to show that a good quality product can usually get its right share of promotion, an unbiased one, through word of mouth starting with bloggers.

As a blogger, I have 3 Christmas wishes that I do hope will come true in 2009.

No, it's got nothing about world peace, or perhaps just a slice of it. But generally, my wishes are not selfish by themselves.

I wish to find the energy, enthusiasm and the time to blog.
Not only to write more posts and in regular intervals,
but so I can be able to read other blogs and interact

The Fear of Not Blogging

This blog is relatively new, but I actually started my very first blog in 2004 when a friend of mine introduced me to Motime. I blogged there for about a couple of years until one day, I suddenly got tired.

That was it. I just woke up one day and stopped. I lost steam. You can think of any other cliche out there to describe it, the bottom line is, I lost the zest to keep on blogging.

Now I started blogging again late last year, this time through Wordpress.com. Why and how? Well, I missed it. I did miss blogging and the joy that I get out of writing my thoughts.

I am currently maintaining other blogs, this one is just one of them. Lately I have this fear that perhaps I would be bitten with the bug again, that bug that makes me stop blogging.

Is it a disease? Some of my friends have stopped blogging for months now. Others, like me, started anew with a new blog, a new theme, everything. Half of these people who started blogging again are still on it, while the other half stopped. Again.

Right now, while I don't have the intention of stopping, there is still the fear that I might wake up one morning and don't have the blogging spirit.

It's a fear and the only remedy that I know is to face my fear. How? By keep on blogging.

Entrecard just recently changed its home page layout. Gone are the updates of the member blogs that we usually find on the right side.

The blog categories are now on the front. This is really kinda neat because now you don't have to go to the Dashboard and click on Campaign just to see the categories and search blogs of a certain niche.

Do you think it's a good upgrade of the home page? Personally, I prefer the old one. It was more inviting and gives bloggers a free promotion or publicity because of the home page updates.

Trying Out the Opera Browser

How effective is word-of-mouth marketing? If you are a blogger I guess you would naturally say that it is damn way too effective. :)

A friend showed me the Opera web browser on his laptop and professed how very fast it is compared to Firefox and Internet Explorer. I did not pay much attention to his sales talk because I am a Firefox lover, having been IE-free for more than a year already. And I'm not just about to try another browser.

But I've been encountering some reviews both from bloggers and respected tech sites claiming that Opera is indeed fast and should definitely be worth a try.

Well, I have to be honest that when it comes to technology like this, I can quite easily be persuaded. So here I am trying out Opera and I'm even using it as I'm making my usual round on my Entrecard dashboard.

All I can say is, I'm very much impressed! So far I can tell that it is faster than Firefox and IE (everything's faster than IE as some would say) and Opera has a nice clean interface. What I like most so far is its Notes function which lets me easily take well, notes, as I browse along.

I'll give Opera a shot for the next few days but so far I am still a Firefox user. :)

Jack Dorsey, the guy who started Twitter and one of the pioneers of micro-blogging, has just been taken out of his CEO role at Twitter, Inc. He is now to be the company's Chairman.

Ah, Chairman. At first glance it seems like a great promotion but in reality, it can mean another thing. A CEO has greater control of the company especially of the day-to-day operations. So being removed from the CEO post might mean a vote of no confidence on Jack Dorsey's capabilities especially since Twitter has not been that profitable as most industry experts have predicted.

Some people get bumped up into the new post as Chairman then after a few months, they would resign or retire. It's like having a graceful exit, but it just takes a little bit more time.

Getting Fired for Blogging

Blogging is a form of personal expression where we send out to the world our thoughts and feelings on a topic that is dear to us. If we write something that does not mean anything in our life, we create something that is shabby and lifeless.

That is why blogging is expression and communication.

But the problem with this freedom, as with any other kinds of freedom, is sometimes we run up against people who don't like what we say and would do something about it.

There have been a number of bloggers who have been fired from their regular jobs as a result of their blogging. Friendster once fired one of their web developers after she blogged about her views of the site's system.

A Delta Airline flight attendant was also fired when she posted photos of herself wearing her uniform. The company saw it as inappropriate.

While I believe in the freedom of expression, I also believe in the rights of other people for their privacy. When we blog and we name names, we should be responsible enough that what we are writing will not cause any grief or shame to others.

Unless of course that is your purpose.

Entrecard Is Slow

For the past couple of days, I've noticed that Entrecard has been very slow. Starting from their main site, whenever I try opening my dashboard, it takes minutes for it to fully load. And when I drop my EC on some blogs, it seems like it takes forever for the widget to say "Thanks!".

Oh, I'm actually trying to log-in to my Entrecard account as I'm typing this post and the Entrecard page showed an error message instead:

The server that does the complicated work has not responded in time, this could be due to load, due to an upgrade happening, or something else even weirder. An alert should have been triggered to the admins so they're no doubt trying to deal with it right now, we recommend trying again in 10 minutes.

Hitwise, a web search marketing and consulting firm, has stated that the results of their recent web search analysis has shown an unexpected shift.

Social networking sites has overtaken 'porn' as among the most searched terms.

Quite interesting, don't you think? But does it mean that people are getting less interested in porn and we just want to have a social, albeit online, life?

I don't think so. Porn is just a few clicks away. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the most bookmarked sites are porn sites. Besides, porn is an old item. Most people are just getting exposed to the wonders of social networking that newcomers to this online phenomenon are making the searches.

Anyway, this is a great thing for sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, and the rest.

My Friend's Annoying Friendster Habit

I have a friend who is a globetrotter. Well, he's family's rich so he could afford to go to places while not having a job at the same time. Some people are just born lucky.

You might think that I'm just being envious. Who wouldn't? But he's my friend and I'm happy that he gets to visit destinations such as New York, Parish, Shanghai, and more. What bothers me is that each time he went to a place, he would take like a hundred photos of himself and create a Friendster account just for that place.

A new Friendster account just for one place!

Can you imagine that? He's got a Friendster account for his Hong Kong visit. He's got a Friendster account for his Boracay visit. He's got a Friendster account for almost every shit hole he's been.

I kept rejecting his Friendster invites on each of these new accounts but he kept on inviting me. When he asked me why I kept rejecting, I told him the truth. That I find it quite annoying that he's got all these Friendster accounts when he could have just create an album for each of his travels on ONE Friendster account.

But he didn't listen. Just now he sent me another invite. I forgot what place it is this time. I just politely rejected it.

For the record, he's still my Friend. I just hate this Friendster habit of his.

Jumping Ship

Have you ever been fired? Retrenched? Forced to leave from your job?

My girlfriend is going through hell right now. Some of her co-workers from different departments have been retrenched and there's a rumor circulating in their office that more will follow. I've told her to start submitting her resume to other companies just to be on the safe side. It's nice to know you have other prospects in case the retrenchment continues.

What is more depressing is that she just found out that her manager is planning to jump ship. So the ship is sinking and one of the deck officers is jumping into the waters ahead of his subordinates and the passengers. Now that's a sure sign that everything is not well.

2. Mt. Everest - I can't climb it. I just would love to see it
3. Batanes - I've seen photos of the place when I was a kid and I can't stop thinking about it

Sushi Go Round

I'm not really a fan of sushis. But I am a fan of this addicting flash game called Sushi Go Round. The gameplay is very simple. You just have to memorize the ingredients of each type of sushi so you can prepare them whenever a customers orders it.

I Need Extra Joss To Keep Me Awake

I don't like coffee. I never really liked its taste, but I do love the smell of it. So when I need to stay up late into the night to finish some stuff, I always turn to energy drinks to help supply me with the necessary caffeine.

I've always preferred Extra Joss because of its taste. I like Red Bull too but it's more expensive compared to the sachet packaging of Extra Joss.

The other day, I asked my mom to buy me a sachet. She gave me quite a lengthy lecture about getting overdosed with caffeine (Extra Joss has 50 mg of it. Regular coffee usually has more.), that ginseng shouldn't be taken on a daily basis, and a dozen other things.

Imagine my surprise when she returned home with, not one sachet, but 2 boxes of Extra Joss!

Oh well, moms really contradict themselves sometimes.

It's Getting Hot In Here!

Our office's air-conditioning system, again, has broken down so we are sweating heavily since the start of our shift. I can't understand why one of the air-conditioning units kept breaking down. I think there are only two tower-type air con units that are currently working, both servicing the 100 people on our floor.

How I wish that they put up some electric fans for the meantime. It's so hard to work when your face kept sweating.

Me: “Good evening sir, how may I help you?”

Customer: “I want a good movie.”

Me: “Of course. I recommend Pan’s Labyrinth… it was excellent.”

Coworker: “You are aware that this movie has subtitles.”

Customer: “What the s*** is that?”

Coworker: “The words at the bottom you have to read. It’s in Spanish.”

Customer: “What the f*** is that? We’re in America, we don’t speak Spanish! I want it in American!”

(He storms off and promptly returns with Apocalypto.)

Me: “Sir, you do know this movie has subtitles, too?”

Customer: “What the f***? What is this country coming to? When did we become another country?! I want a g**d*** American movie! Where are the American movies?”

Me: “The store is full of movies made in America.”

(He walks back up about 10 minutes later with Letters From Iwo Jima in his hand.)

Customer: “This is the movie by Clint Eastwood, right?”

Coworker: “Yes, it is.”

Me: “And it’s really good, too.”

Customer: “Clint Eastwood is a real American. He knows what I like!”

(I give a look to my coworker who doesn’t say anything this time, and we rent him the movie. Too bad Letters From Iwo Jima is all in Japanese with English subtitles.)

Nhil and I attended the recent Coca-Cola Bloggers Party at Taste Asia at the Mall of Asia (too many Asias!). We didn't finish the event because we have to go someplace else so we queued at the taxi lane. The line of passengers was considerably long and after quite a bit of waiting, we finally got our turn at the front. Then a foreigner, I think he's Greek or someone from that region, approached me.

Greek Guy: "Excuse me, how can I get to the airport?"

Me: "Just take a taxi."

Greek Guy: "Ok. Thank you."

Then just that, he opened the door of the taxi I was about to board. He went inside the car and the taxi sped off. I was left dumbfounded. When I turned around all the people behind me had the same look on their faces.

They couldn't believe the Greek guy cheated all of us!

I couldn't believe he stole my cab!

Funny thing was, although I should have felt angry, the truth is that I wasn't. I smiled at the people behind me and said out loud, "Well, let's just be kind to tourists."

They smiled back.

I have a new fave snack here in the office.

Oatmeal + Milo

My officemate asked why I don't just buy a chocolate-flavored oatmeal. Well, he maybe right but I prefer to mix the chocolate and the oatmeal myself. Plus I really love the taste of Milo especially if it's not properly dissolved, with bits and chunks floating on the oatmeal.

That's a definite yum-yum!

The Lady Programmer posted 6 easy to follow tips on how to make your PC perform faster. I used to try everything she mentioned there but the one thing on her list that totally crippled my computer were viruses.

I did every precaution I could think of back then. I installed two anti-virus softwares, scanned every flash drive, diskette or cd before I opened them, I stayed away from websites I'm not familiar with and may contain spyware, etc. And I downloaded files only from respected sites. But still, I got attacked by viruses.

So now I'm using Linux in my laptop and so far everything's working great! I still perform virus scan every now and then but it always yielded nothing.

Free WIFI All Around Davao City

I frequent Robinsons Galleria for its free WiFi connection at its uppermost level. What I usually do is I'd order a meal at Burger King or Chef d' Angelo's and stay for at least 2 hours so I can make the most of the free WiFi.

It's the only convenient place for me that has this type of internet access and I prefer Galleria because it's free. I tried looking around in the Ortigas area but most similar spots are coffee shops. I don't drink coffee and... I don't know, I'm just not used to staying in a coffee shop.

How I wish there are other free WiFi access here.

I've never been to Davao and I was surprised to learn from Call Center Gal that there are a lot of free WiFi spots in that city. I surmised from her First WiFi Experience in Davao blog entry that Bo's Coffee Club is a good place if you want a free connection while drinking your favorite cup of coffee. Well, should I be lucky to visit Davao, I'm pretty sure any coffee shop there would also serve hot chocolate.

I'm a sucker for hot choco... and free WiFi.

I opened my blog the other day and was surprised to be greeted with a message from Blogger saying that this blog may be a spam.

Well, I'm not a spammer and this blog is honest-to-goodness ain't a spam!

So I asked them to review my site and now, my blog's back! Kudos to the Blogger guys for the quick review and for giving me access to my blog again.

From Wordpress to Blogger

I've decided to migrate to Blogger from my Wordpress blog Papa Ces. What's the reason for the change? I don't have a sane answer to that, other than I wanted to try blogging using Blogspot.
